Dedicated Server FAQs

Answers to FAQs about Windows and Linux dedicated servers and dedicated servers with GPU.

What is a Windows dedicate server?

expand_more
A Windows dedicated server is a physical server runs on a Microsoft Windows server operating system. Windows Server provides a range of editions, such as Windows Server 2019 or Windows Server 2022, with varying feature sets and capabilities. Each edition offers support for Microsoft technologies and frameworks, such as .NET, ASP.NET, SQL Server, Active Directory, and more. The compatibility with Microsoft technologies, the customization options, and the strong support ecosystem make Windows dedicated servers popular among businesses, developers, and organizations that require specific Microsoft software and a high level of control. Windows dedicated servers are commonly used for a wide range of applications, including hosting websites and web applications, running Microsoft databases, deploying enterprise software, hosting remote desktop services, and more.

What is a Linux dedicated server?

expand_more
A Linux dedicated server is a physical server runs on a Linux distribution. Linux is an open-source operating system that offers a wide range of distributions, such as Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, and more. Each distribution may have its own set of features, package management systems, and community support. Before choosing a Linux dedicated server, you should consider the compatibility of your applications, software stack, and any specific requirements tied to a particular operating system. A Linux dedicated server is well-suited for web servers, scripting languages like PHP and Python, and popular databases like MySQL and PostgreSQL.

What is a dedicated server with GPU?

expand_more
A dedicated servers with GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is optimized to handle complex graphic-intensive tasks, such as rendering, games, machine learning, scientific simulation and data processing. It is a high-performance computing solution that utilizes one or more dedicated graphics processing units (GPUs) to speed up data processing.
Compared with CPU-only servers, dedicated servers with GPU have many advantages, including faster processing speed, higher accuracy, shorter latency and the ability to process larger data sets. They are also more energy efficient, enabling organizations to save electricity bills.

What is the difference between bare metal servers and dedicated servers?

expand_more
Bare metal hosting refers to the provision of a single-tenant physical server without any virtualization layer or pre-installed operating system. While dedicated server hosting comes with a pre-installed operating system or virtualization layer. Both hosting service are used for resource-intensive workloads, such as databases, enterprise applications, and hosting multiple virtual machines or containers.

What is the difference between dedicated server and virtual private server?

expand_more
A virtual server is a hosting service that uses virtualization technology to provide clients with dedicated resources on a single physical server. One physical server hosts multiple virtual servers, each isolated from the others. Virtual servers are the more common cloud computing model because they offer great resource density, fast provisioning times, and the ability to scale up and down quickly.

A dedicated server is a physical hosting device dedicated to a single client (tenant) only. Dedicated servers are the right fit for a few primary use cases that take advantage of the combination of attributes. These attributes are dedicated resources, greater processing power, and more consistent disk and network I/O performance.

What can a dedicated server be used for?

expand_more
There are many uses for a dedicated server: big data, machine learning, website, web application hosting, storage and backup, infrastructure virtualization, server clusters, business applications (CRM, ERP), and online game hosting. This is why we offer several dedicated server ranges, each of which is for a specific set of needs. Our sales and support teams will help you with your project and can offer expert advice on which server to choose. Dedicated server hosting is a good fit if you look for the most power and control over your hosting environment. It's also recommended that you have advanced server administrative skills to manage your dedicated server.

What can a dedicated server with GPU be used for?

expand_more
A GPU dedicated server is a dedicated server packed with one or more GPU cards. Since it's a dedicated server, you get exclusive access to the physical server, receiving maximum security, performance, and availability. With one or more GPU cards, the servers are an excellent solution for projects requiring high-performance computing resources. The dedicated GPUs are mostly used for deep machine learning, architectural visualization, video processing, and scientific computing.

What is IPMI and what can it be used for?

expand_more
IPMI stands for Intelligent Platform Management Interface. It is a standardized computer system interface that provides out-of-band management and monitoring capabilities for dedicated servers. IPMI is typically implemented as firmware on the baseboard of a server and communicates with the server's BMC (Baseboard Management Controller). IPMI enables administrators to remotely monitor and manage various aspects of a server's hardware, even if the server is turned off or unresponsive. It operates independently of the main CPU and operating system, allowing administrators to access the server at a low-level hardware level.

How long will it take to set up my dedicated server?

expand_more
We typically need 4-48 preparation hours before we can deliver a dedicated server.

Virtualization allows you to run multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical server, which can help you optimize resource utilization, consolidate workloads, and improve overall efficiency. Please note that the GPU card can not be virtualized if you are using a dedicated server with GPU.

What software can I use to virtualize it?

expand_more
There are several software options available for virtualizing a dedicated server. Here are some popular ones: VMware, Proxmox, Microsoft Hyper-V (may require Windows lincense fee), KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), Xen, and Docker (While not a traditional virtualization solution, Docker is a popular platform for containerization).

The choice of virtualization software depends on your specific requirements, operating system preferences, and level of expertise. It's important to consider factors like performance, scalability, management features, and compatibility with your server hardware and operating system when selecting a virtualization solution.
